Oh happy day!

The University of Illinois has officially retired the racist depiction of the indigenous inhabitants of this hemisphere found in the persona of Chief Illiniwek! (story here)

The University of Illinois has voted to retire the name "Chief Illinwek," his associated regalia, and image.

This is a great day in Indian Country! This has been a long and arduous journey of education.

For those of you who don't understand the mascot controversy, I simply ask you:
Would it be appropriate to have a sports team known as the San Antonio Spics, Chicago Kikes, or the Atlanta Sambos?

If these mascots or nicknames are not appropriate then why is it appropriate to name sports teams after indigenous peoples or personas?
Yes, there is a long way to go...but today is a great step in ending this blatant racism.
