Teach for America update #2

I had my interview with TFA on Tuesday and can you believe that I overslept! Now, I managed to make it to the interview on time and completely dressed, but I still overslept past the time I wanted to get up and did actually get to the site later than I wanted to, however did manage to get there in time...but, it still really stressed me out!

That being said, I think the interview went really, really well. There were 9 other applicants there that day, but that isn't really important because TFA isn't competitive in the sense that you're working against other applicants...basically if you meet TFA's requirements and standards then you'll be selected.

We started off each leading a five-minute class session using a lesson plan we created. I taught basic numbers and primary colors in Mikasuki and everyone said they really enjoyed it. The others taught things ranging from DNA to personification. I found the mix of subjects people chose to be really interesting, along with the grade levels they chose those subjects to represent.

After that we had a group problem (the interviewers basically stood back and watched us interact) to work out that basically put us in the role of teachers on a school leadership team whose school is not meeting standards and what recommendations did we have to help meet those standards. I think that went well except that I think we failed to address the topic we were assigned fully...I think the group just jumped in and started thinking of ideas to fix the problem without recognizing that we were given a specific task. I tried several times to get us back on task, but they sort of ignored me? I'm not sure what to make of that?

Finally, there was a one-on-one interview with myself and a TFA staffer. I think that went really well. But I suppose the true measure is if I'm hired/selected to join TFA.

I find out on November 7 if I've been selected, so keep praying!

Buh? Say it ain't so!

I read the following on a blog that I read regularly and found it unbelievable...until I checked Wal-Mart's website myself.

From Moneybags who got it from AFA.net:

When Wal-Mart announced their support for the homosexual agenda a few weeks ago, they meant what they said. You will remember that Wal-Mart asked for, and received, permission to join the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). The company announced they were giving two large grants to NGLCC. The world's largest retailer was rewarded with a position on the board of NGLCC. Wal-Mart also announced they would give preference to homosexual-owned businesses in purchasing products.

Justin Nelson, president of NGLCC, said he expects Wal-Mart to use its influence to pressure suppliers like P&G, Johnson & Johnson, and Gillette to give homosexual businesses preferential treatment. Wal-Mart is also working on a plan to provide domestic-partnership benefits to homosexual employee "partners." The NGLCC is a leading promoter of homosexual marriage....

A quick search of Wal-Mart's website turned up the following number of items for sale:
Gay - 1148
Lesbian - 468
Transgender - 40
Bisexual - 38
Gay Marriage - 26

I didn't believe it myself, but I checked Wal-Mart's site (here) and I'm telling you it's true!

Has Wal-Mart forgotten who their primary customer base is?

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Obama baracks my world!

I have to admit it...I'm a gun owner, a conservative Christian, and a Democrat! That's right, I'm a conservative Democrat! I'm a proud supporter of gun owners rights, I believe in the right to life from womb to tomb, and I'm a staunch supporter of Democrats for Life!

So that is why today has been so awesome! This morning on Meet the Press, Illinois Senator Barack Obama opened the door for a 2008 Presidential run!!!!
The dream's still alive!

Teach for America update

Well, I've been invited to a full-day interview with Teach for America on Tuesday (see my original post on TFA)!!!

I'm really excited about this, as TFA is one of two possible options I'm contemplating for after I graduate from Harvard in June.

With TFA I'd be able to teach in a reservation community and I've chosen their South Dakota and New Mexico sites which serve the Pine Ridge/Rosebud and Navajo/Zuni communities respectively.

I have to teach a five-minute lesson during the interview to the other interviewees and the interviewers so I've come up with a short lesson to teach numbers and colors in Mvskoke language. I'm excited about that, I love sharing heritage!

Anyway, just keep me in your prayers!

Medal of DisHonor

Let me first say that I have the highest regard for veterans. I truly appreciate and honor those veterans who fought and died honorably in the service of their people and the cause of freedom.

American Indians have the highest per capita service in the US armed forces of any racial or minority group and have distinguished themselves in every military campaign the US has engaged in...examples include
Cpl. Ira Hayes (Akimel O'odham) who helped raise the flag on Iwo Jima in World War II, Spc. Lori Piestewa (Hopi) who was the first American Indian female killed in combat (Iraq), to the Navajo, Hopi and Comanche code-talkers of World War II and the Choctaw code-talkers of World War I (about code talkers).

However, I am in total disgust over the fact that the United States awarded 18 members of the 7th US Cavalry the Congressional Medal of Honor for their conduct during the Massacre at Wounded Knee, South Dakota on December 29, 1890 (
Wikipedia article).

In case you're not aware of the Massacre at Wounded Knee, here are the highlights: The 7th US Cavalry fired on unarmed Lakota who were gathered to participate in the religious ritual of the Ghost Dance. Upwards of 300 Lakota were killed, including Chief Big Foot and numerous women, some pregnant, and children...many of whom were shot in the back, indicating they were fleeing the fight, not taking part!

Here are the "winners" of the Congressional Medal of DisHonor (

Deliver Us From Evil?

The AngyTwins have posted this on their blog...I haven't heard of it before but I'm definitely intrigued.

It's billed as a documentary on the clergy sex-abuse scandal (official site here). It's set to open in Boston on Friday the 13th at the Landmark Theatre in Kendall Square Cambridge at One Kendall Square (Friday the 13th showtimes: 2:15, 4:45, 7:20, 9:50).

Though I have to wonder about the politics of it...I mean is it trying to get the story out in the open, which is a good and healthy thing, or is it simply anti-Catholic propaganda?

Big brother to the rescue!

I went shopping for a new rifle today! It's a special rifle, it's going to be used to scare the bejesus out of the creep who is dating my little sister! And, if need be, fill him full of holes! Don't worry, I'd never kill him, just maim him a little :-p

You see, I just found out that my little sister, who happens to have just turned 18 but hasn't graduated from high school yet...is dating a 23 year old Captain in the Air Force! This has evidently been going on for awhile, so while you might say "well, she's 18," that means that they started dating while she was 17!

What on God's green earth does a 23 year old see in a 17, much less 18, year old? I think I know! And I'm friggin' not happy about it!

My little sister is brilliant, and has already received a half scholarship to attend Duke University and is trying to find enough more money to make that a reality. I will not have this creep taking advantage of my sister and jeopardizing her future!

Supposedly this thing is serious enough that his parents are going to Oklahoma to visit and meet her and my sister is planning to fly to Massachusetts in May to visit his family. This is not going to do!

God give me strength, and good aim!

A great nite at Harvard!

It's like 2:3o in the morning and I just got back from celebrating my friend Anna's birthday with a bunch of friends. I have to admit I'm just a little, teeny, weeny bit tipsy...I drank 3.5 margaritas (0ne friend didn't finish theirs and you can't just leave alcohol...can you?).

It was a fabulous night out with great friends! It's one of those times that I'm glad I came to Harvard, and some times it doesn't feel like there are a lot of those.

It was so awesome being out with them, especially after the atrocious loss to some college from Texas that OU had today.

My friends are the bestest!
